By Lizbeth Kariuki How can you make money while you study? There are United States International University (USIU) students that have found a way.
Fusing ingenuity, entrepreneurship skills and talent was the intention of the just concluded Fusion Week 2013. Formerly known as SAC week, Fusion Week 2013 proved that (USIU) students do not just attend lectures and study; they practice what they learn in their own businesses. Fusion Week, which ran on 3rd June to 6th June, was organized by SAC officials to give USIU entrepreneurial students the chance to showcase their various products and services. The opportunity was open to all entrepreneurial students to sign up for the event. The grounds behind the cafeteria became a one-stop shop for all of one’s shopping needs. The businesses that one could find included: · Nail care services and henna application · Fashion jewellery and perfumes · Make-up services · Fashion clothes, shoes and bags · Food and catering The peak time was between 12.40pm to 1.20pm and the area behind the cafeteria was a buzz as both students and lecturers walked around purchasing a variety of products. ‘A lot of students actually do not bother to attend Fusion Week because they think the items that are being sold there are expensive.’ Idah, a USIU student and entrepreneur, remarked. ‘That’s why I like to sell by word-of-mouth.’ She continued. On the other hand, Maureen, a student selling clothes commented; ‘All my clothes are reasonably priced. They are not as expensive as the clothes you would normally find in the stores in town.’ This week not only gave USIU entrepreneurial students the opportunity to make money, but an opportunity for students to sign up and showcase their businesses during the USIU Career Fair. The USIU Career Fair, which is being held at the end of June, will have already established Kenyan organizations participate. This will give students a chance to interact with potential sponsors for their businesses. USIU clubs were not left behind.
These were among the clubs that had displays to draw in the attention of USIU students. Global Networking club ran a FIFA PlayStation competition that largely attracted the USIU male student population. The winner of the competition walked home with the amount of money raised from the competition’s registration fee. A crowd also gathered to watch Step-Up Revolution which was projected on a TV screen by Journalism club. Images of the event captured by photographers of Ona Photography were on display as well. Students could also sign-up for the upcoming Mr. and Miss USIU beauty pageant that is normally held in November each year. The highlight of the week was the culmination event that took place in the USIU auditorium on Thursday evening. Amileena, former Tusker Project Fame contestant, graced the event with a stunning performance of one of her songs. The opportunity for students to market and showcase their businesses did not end when Fusion Week ended. Lillian Bogonko, a counselor from the Careers office in USIU informed the entrepreneurial students that took part in Fusion week that they can sign-up to showcase their businesses again during Career Fair. For student entrepreneurs seeking for sponsors, the Career Fair gives them the greatest chance to do so.
