StartUpNow Entrepreneurs Hangout, a new monthly entrepreneurs’ event organized by Wilkings Fadhili was held last weekend at Ford Hall-National Museum, Kenya. The hangouts culminate into a continental entrepreneur's summit, which will take place later in the year.
The first hangout event which was on 24th February brought together entrepreneurs from different sectors coming together to network, share experiences, challenges and had inspiration moment from the top guest entrepreneur Suzie Wokabi-Founder and CEO of SuzieBeauty Ltd, one of Kenya's most successful entrepreneurs. In 2013, Suzie received a finalist award for the Most Influential Women in Business & Government in Africa. At the end of 2015, Flame Tree Group acquired the brand. The brand now has the ability to increase reach, and has gained a partner that will help the brand get to the next level and implement all planned strategies. Additionally, the company plays a key role in the fashion, beauty, media and bridal industries and has established a seasonal school where aspiring local make-up-artists can learn this valuable skill. Suzie Wokabi is the Chief Creative Officer and Brand Ambassador of SuzieBeauty at The Flame Tree Group. “My three key secrets to success are passion, patience and perseverance. These keep me going and even though I sold out a major part of the business, I still play a key role and there is nothing better than seeing the brand has grown so far. It is all about taking a risk. It is not easy to break into or be successful, success stories all revolve around extreme passion.” Said Suzie Wokabi. The concept behind StartUpNow Entrepreneurs Hangout is to create a community of both established and upcoming entrepreneurs who come together to network, create partnerships, share experiences /challenges, learn from each other and create conversations that revolve around solving top challenges faced in Africa and at the same time move their companies to sustainability. “There are many young Kenyans with brilliant ideas and young companies, what we lack is an opportunity to interact with like minded entrepreneurs, imagine the number of solutions that are created by just five startups coming together. Numerous! I hope this will steer us into boosting the now increasing self-employed youth in Kenya.’ said Wilkings. The event also involved the Writers Guild Kenya who took part in critiquing entrepreneurship and careers in the current day. As entertainment, the attendees were also entertained with spoken word poems to music the Writers Guild Kenya. The first Hangout had over 70 entrepreneurs in attendance, the group aims at having eight more hangouts in the year and one major international summit which will be held in November uniting all budding entrepreneurs and speakers. The program is steered by Wilkings Fadhili, a fashionpreneur, founder of StartUpNow and CEO of Fashion Torch Africa and Safaricom's BLAZE BYOB mentor . Wilkings Fadhili was also listed top 40 under 40 Kenyans in 2015.

This is their first time to participate in any major event in Kisumu, or western Kenya. This festival is the first of many more to come, and is aimed at selling Western Kenya as a fashion and tourism destination. Western Kenya is quickly catching up to Nairobi as an entertainment hub and this festival plays a huge role in promoting the status of our region. The event is meant to bring together designers, entrepreneurs, fashionistas and the general public to an open-marketplace experience that will showcase various products all under one roof. The festival promises not just display and sales of fashion products, but also services from leading cosmetic brands in the country. There will be lots of great Christmas season bargains and samplings to be done, as well as treats. You don't wanna miss this! By Lizbeth Kariuki The one thing that Africa has proven to be true over centuries - our deep cultural heritage. This shines especially through our arts. Hence the reason why the International Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AAMA) are calling on artists, song writers, music journalists, video directors, music producers or unrecorded artists, to submit entries of musical works by 5th July 2014. Entries are limited to music industry professionals who are of African origin, and the work must have been released between 31st May 2013 to 4th July 2014. Scheduled to take place in Lagos, Nigeria between the 21st to 25th of October, the event provides a platform for artists to gain recognition for their work, with no discrimination. Plus all entries will be selected by a jury of 13 professionals from Africa's music industry who have an great understanding of music, but no longer create it anymore. For more information on the awards and how you can submit your entries, please click on the AFRIMA website. Thanks for stopping by Fab One's. By Lizbeth Kariuki The 3rd International Kenya Kite Festival went down on Sunday 23rd March 2014. The event is the next largest Kite festival in Africa following the South African one. The Kenya Kite Festival is organized by Urban Live Kenya, and this year it featured lots of family fun and a great kite spectacle that was enjoyable to watch. See the highlights from the event below. USIU Hosts Annual Culture Week Event By Lizbeth Kariuki "This event feels like going to Blankets and Wine everyday, yet students are meant to be coming for class," commented an exhibitor during the USIU Culture week. Her comment was especially directed towards the dress code of USIU students. As a former USIU student, I found her comment hilarious and yet honestly speaking she was right. The atmosphere at the culture week which was held from 10th March to 13th March was that of excitement, fun and energy. USIU is a campus that boasts of several cultures on campus - 86 to be exact. Therefore there was a lot on display and each community that had a display stand pulled out all the stops to make sure they stood out. As this is a fashion blog, we cannot leave the fashion out. Students went the extra mile to dress in modern outfits with African influences in the print, design or cut. You can check out some of the highlights below: If there is one event that brings the whole university together no matter the culture, it is definitely culture week, held every Spring semester.
Fashion, Fun and Family By Lizbeth Kariuki All the stops were pulled at the Spring edition of Nairobi Fashion Market. Held on the 15th and 16th of March 2014, the fresh green grass and sunshine really made the event spectacular. There was something for everyone; ladies received several discounts on clothing items and accessories, the children played in the kids play zone and the men enjoyed their beers while listening to music. Highlights from the fashion show on Saturday 15th March 2013. The designers that showcased included:
By Lizbeth Kariuki If you are in the fashion industry, you want to showcase at this event, if you are in the entertainment industry, you want to be seen at this event. Basically, the Fashion High Tea is an event not to miss. Even though I felt it was not promoted as much as it could have been, the event was still very well attended by the who’s who of Nairobi’s elite in the fashion and entertainment scene. The event was held at Zen Gardens on Saturday 8th February 2014, and had a lavish high tea menu, drinks and great people in the mix. The ladies and gentlemen did not disappoint, as they dressed to impress. By Lizbeth Kariuki Kenya's fashion scene is growing immensely, and girls everywhere want to be caught at events such as Fashion High Tea. Simply because the event has already garnered rave reviews on pizzazz, style and execution. Not to mention the amount of high profile guests and personalities that happen to show up at the event. The event is still fairly new in the Kenyan fashion industry, and even though the concept is not exactly very new, it has grown to the point where the event organizer's do not really have to promote the event as the concept can do it on its own. Plus the tickets will gather the ABC+ crowd the event is looking for.
