The sun came out bright and beautiful over the weekend. I couldn't help but capture the sights I saw through the day. Thanks for stopping by Fab One's.

After four good years, I finally graduated from university with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism. I look back with such nostalgia, especially since I met my co-blogger, Nduta towards the end of our third year. From all the memories created while in University, I am most fond of the one's I made with my closest friends. So here's to our future! Thanks for stopping by Fab One's.
I've always wanted to do a tag-post for the longest time. A tag-post is basically where bloggers answer short questions that revolve around their favorite things. So if you are a fashion blogger, copy this tag-post and share your links :) MAKEUP ♥ Blush Or bronzer? Bronzer. It makes me literally glow. I remember wearing bronzer one day and when sitting in the sun with my friend, she goes. “Are you a Twilight vampire now?” I think I put too much on that day (but, you can never have too much). ♥ Lip gloss or lipstick? Lip gloss. I love that it plumps up your lips. Even when I wear lipstick I boost it with lipgloss. In fact I’d go for a lip gloss that also colors my lips any day. ♥ Eyeliner or mascara? Mascara. The longer my lashes the better for flirting. ♥ Foundation or concealer? I don’t use either. Though, I’m not saying I have perfect skin, so if I had to choose, I’d probably go for concealer. ♥ Neutral eye shadow or color eye shadow? Color eye shadow. In my head: more color equals more fun. ♥ Foundation or Neutral? Neutral. I often find that women that wear foundation look like they have sticky skin. My skin needs to breathe. NAILS ♥ Long or short? This is hard to choose. Sometimes I like my nails long, sometimes short is just more convenient. Majority of the time my nails are short, they’re rarely strong enough to remain long. ♥ Acrylic or natural? Natural. I’m all about the au naturel nail…it just looks better. ♥ Brights or darks? Darks. They seem to go better with my skin tone. I’m not opposed to a bright nail though, depending on the outfit. FASHION
♥ Jeans or sweat pants? Sweat pants. Only because they are just.So.Comfortable. You will never catch me dead in sweatpants outside the house though. ♥ Long sleeve or short? Short sleeve. I love to bare my arms. ♥ Dresses or skirts? Dresses. You don’t have to think much about what to pair them with. Plus they slip on and off quickly. ♥ Stripes or plaid? Stripes. I love the nautical look, which involves a lot of stripes…and I think plaid offer’s room for terrible looks. ♥ Flip flops or sandals? Sandals. You can wear them with several outfits and it doesn’t look as casual as flip flops do. ♥ Scarves or hats? Scarves. I have asthma, so I own a lot of scarves to keep my chest warm. Even though I heard majority of heat from your body escapes from your head…oh well. ♥ Studs or dangly earrings? Studs. No particular reason, I just seem to wear them a lot more than dangly earrings. ♥ Necklaces or bracelets? Necklaces. My wrists are tiny, so it’s hard to find bracelets that fit well. If I do get bracelets, they have to be the adjustable ones. ♥ Heels or flats? Heels. I wear flats more though, but I prefer heels, they elongate my legs. ♥ Jacket or hoodie? Jackets offer more of a rocker chick look, which I’m into. Thanks for stopping by Fab One's. You can check out more of my photographer's photo's at Owise. The sun came out the day I took these photo's! I was so excited, seeing as Nairobi has been so cold of late. I could feel my skin soaking up each ray of sunshine.
When shooting these pictures, my photographer Owino noticed an “Adam and Eve” theme going on. Perhaps it was the teal dress and the garden setting. Anyway, I loved the idea because it signifies a new beginning which is what I want. The fruit in the first image is an avocado. I don’t like avocado's…but it was the closest fruit we could find. We literally picked it from a nearby tree :) Thanks for stopping by Fab One's. By Lizbeth Kariuki In line with the upcoming StoryMoja Festival (read more by clicking on the link), I wrote a story that was published on the StoryMoja Festival Blog. You can also read it below: “I don’t want to study law,” I whimpered. I would never be good enough for her. My demeanor was sluggish, my writing was mediocre at best, and my entire being had to be revolved around doing tasks her way. And the worst of it all, my voice could never relay what my deepest thoughts were. “But mum…” My desperate cries interrupted by her continued shrieks of disappointment. Her unrelenting comparisons between me and my (much older) lawyer cousin clearly conveyed that I would never be as perfect. I would never be her poster-child. Perhaps what scared her most was that I didn’t care what she thought. In my mother’s eyes I am meant to be the ever obedient child, and should never question status quo. Her word was law. Funny thing about rules though, even the enforcers tend to break one or two, especially if there are too many. But my mother is “perfect” and I could never question her mistakes, so I feared her and I could never speak out. Plus, her stringent view that she must control what I do in life is ultimately one of her biggest mistakes. My sweet escape will come when I join university… that is my hope. But not to study law or any other subject my mother dictates I study. I want to study art. There’s a lot of freedom in it, and my heart yearns for that freedom. I love the blank space, the white canvas, so pure and untouched. The white sits there beckoning for me to splash all my imagination and it will never condemn or insult what I do. I want more white blank spaces because they never set expectations; I set my own. I cannot ever make a mistake – it just becomes art. My freedom from my mother’s tyranny will come essentially from locking myself in art. It’s ironic that I’ll be locking myself in another prison, but it’s going to be my choice, and not my mothers. Thank you for stopping by Fab One's. By Lizbeth Kariuki I wanted to keep with the trend, just like my fellow bloggers. Therefore, here is my post on taking stock:
Making: Banana pancakes. I absolutely love anything sweet, and if I can combine fruits in the treat, its absolutely the best! Cooking: Omlette’s. Very easy and quick to make, plus my obsession with egg’s is kind of getting out of hand…oops! Drinking: Soda, and I can’t seem to get enough of it. When the sun is high up in the sky, a fizzy drink is what gets me going; sugar and all. Wasting: My money on soda. Reading: Think Big by Dr. Ben Carson. A gift from my late Aunt, and it is an extremely inspirational read. I just finished reading his first book; Gifted Hands. Wanting: My graduation dinner dress. My graduation is in August and I’m currently looking for what to wear. Looking: Forward to my graduation in August, and what my future has in store for me! Playing: Soltaire, a lot! What can I say, I’m not into new games such as Flappy Bird or Angry Birds…I’m more into traditional forms of addictive games. Sewing: A new item where I can hang all my earrings on; they are just too many to keep in a container. Plus it’s so frustrating to try and find the matching pairs when they are all tangled together. Wishing: I could travel for just a bit…just a bit. Enjoying: WiFi, and hoping I am using it to the full extent that it should be used. Waiting: For Godzilla…can’t wait! Liking: The series Veep. Can’t wait for season 3. Loving: Paramore’s song “Ain’t it Fun” it’s just that awesome. Hoping: For so many things I can’t list them all. Marveling: At how my pet cat Minnie can play soccer. Yes, it’s a fact that cats can be trained to play soccer. Needing: New magazine’s…gosh I’ve gone over last month’s issue’s too many times. Smelling: I have a major problem with sinus'...so not really sure I can smell anything, sadly. Wearing: Jeggings (I don’t care whether people say they are not pants) and a loose, off-the shoulder top. Feeling quite comfortable. Noticing: How fast the year is flying, it’s April already…what?! Knowing: It’s about to rain. Oh....now its raining (Psychic) Thinking: About how I really should plan to travel soon. (Ref: Wishing) Feeling: Multiple emotions. Book-marking: Lot’s of blogs from fellow fashionista’s. Opening: A new packet of gum (satisfying my sweet tooth). Giggling: At new episodes of Modern Family - you know you love them. By Lizbeth Kariuki Suzie Wokabi, Sharon Mundia, Serah Kanyua and Emo Rugene, do these names ring a bell? They have all managed to curve out a niche for themselves in the Kenyan fashion industry. I had the pleasure of attending a forum last week at USIU where they discussed their successes and challenges of being an entrepreneur in the fashion industry. For women or men out there who are still looking to create their own niche in the Kenyan fashion and beauty industry, here are some pointers from those who have already forged ahead. Susan Wokabi is the CEO and founder of Suzie Beauty, Kenya's first cosmetic beauty line. Suzie graduated from USIU a few years back and moved to New York where she trained with the well-known beauty brand Clinique for about a year. With a burning desire to continue in the beauty industry and specifically the make-up world, she returned to Kenya to setup her own business. After visiting around 30 factories all around the world that could produce her make-up line (with a formula she created for the African skin), she finally found the one and thus the birth of Suzie Beauty. She encompasses what hard work and determination can bring forth. The make-up line has grown immensely, and she reminisced on the way Lupita Nyong’o used a product and sales shot for the Lupita lipstick. She mentioned that one of the most important things is to: “Get the product right.” And you cannot go wrong. Sharon Mundia is a full-time Kenyan fashion blogger. Her blog is named This is Ess. She created her blog around two years ago after completing college and at the end of a romantic relationship. Since then, she has developed it into a business for herself. For those who are interested in creating business from their blog, these are the key pointers she outlined:
By Lizbeth Kariuki As a lady, losing your earring stoppers is one of the most common and most frustrating thing that can happen. Worse still, is if it happens when you are out and about and can't grab a stopper from your earring collection. That's what happened to me today when I was heading to work. My earring's completed my look fantastically, and all of a sudden the earring stopper on my right ear decides to come loose and I left it somewhere behind on the street.
I had two choices; either run the risk of looking weird the whole day with just one large earring on (and act dumb like I didn't notice the other was missing), or just go without earrings. Well, I chose neither and instead used this old trick I learnt while in high school. I took a pencil eraser and cut of the end bit, large enough to act like a stopper, and guess what - it worked! So if you are ever in a fix, and lose your earring stoppers, cut off a piece of an eraser and it can work as an earring stopper for the rest of the day even forever. Have a FAB day! By Lizbeth Kariuki I've often received comments from women wondering whether I am wearing foundation, and when I tell them that I'm not, they get so surprised. The fact is, I can't complain about my skin, as I have never suffered from acne or pimples. I have dry skin, but I've learnt how to take care of it to the point where I do not see the need to apply foundation or concealer to hide any impurities. There are very simple things that you can include in your life to help you achieve flawless skin. For the different skin types; normal, oily, dry and combination skin, you can access different products and eat various foods to keep your skin looking healthy. To keep my face, and skin in general looking good and feeling great, I do not over do it with the beauty products. I try and stick to the same products and not keep changing them. Plus I try and keep a routine, that is one of the only ways the results of beauty products actually show. I use basic products to keep my skin moisturized and in this article, I will share with you what I use. |
