By Lizbeth Kariuki On an extremely hot Saturday morning, I set about making sangria's, because everyday should be Sangria Day - right? I've put together my very simple sangria recipe using items you could find easily (or buy easily) in a Kenyan kitchen. Ingredients: 1 Green/Red Apple 1 Lemon 1 Lime 1 Bottle of White Wine (I prefer the South African Brands) 1 Bottle of Stoney Tangawizi Directions: Cut up the apple, lemon and lime into small slices (you can use my picture for reference). Place them in a pitcher with 2 cups of white wine, then refrigerate for about an hour (let the fruit soak up all that booze). Remove from the refrigerator and add 1 cup of stoney (or more, if you wish). Serve (great for 2-3 people). Thanks for stopping by Fab One's!

By Wini Nduta If you are moving out of your parents' home, you likely will not move into that six bedroom mansion right away. If you consider your space tiny, storage can feel like it is non-existent. I moved into a one bedroom that had the kitchen sharing a space with the sitting space. I loved it. I was so proud of myself to be able to provide for myself. I had to get clever about the space though. Here are some tricks you can use to store your stuff in an organized way: 1. Storage Baskets These can fit easily under your bed and on top of shelves around the house. Get creative and stick these under the coffee table too. These are good for storing everyday items such as books and cables plus they give the room a more organized look. If these baskets come with a cover, that a plus. You can also pick a metal or plastic basket which are easy to clean. 2. Same size mason jars This is good for your kitchen area. They can stand side by side on your shelf so as to save space. You can also get tiny plastic containers for your spices. These containers also allow you to stick on label to avoid confusion. This can be a fun DIY project. 3. Suitcases Store your special occasion outfits in a suitcase. This saves on your closet space and also makes it less prone to damage. Remember to add mothballs or silica gel sachets. How else do you make your space manageable? Tell us in the comments below :)
By Wini Nduta Are you guys into herbal teas like I am? I enjoy the process of walking into the supermarket, reading the label to see what good this packet of tea will do for me, choosing which one I will take home with me on that day, the getting home and unwrapping the pack YAY, then let's get the hot water and taste it! To be honest some teas, like my favorite Mwarubaini, are bitter but the benefits totally outweigh the taste. Many of the people I know cringe at the suggestion of drinking this tea but it really does have a million or forty benefits *see what I did there*. This drink is good for your stomach especially with bloating and aches, general detox, your blood, your breathing system and many more. Neem in all it's forms is really good for your health. Another one I am liking is Peppermint tea. I really does have a soothing effect which just relaxes you instantly. The first time I had some I wasn't so sure but I liked it. It also comes in the sweet Peppermint variety which might help those interested in getting the most out of taste. A few of us came together and bought a box of Roobois tea. We split it amongst ourselves and tried it. It doesn't have a taste but again the benefits, it is packed with minerals which is good for your teeth and bones. I also read that it is good for asthma, especially with the flimsy weather it can come in handy. *I don't take sugar or milk so these are just the tea bag plus hot water* What beverages do you love to indulge in? As per kawa share with us in the comments section, we would love to hear from you! By Wini Nduta Right when I get home at the end of the day, I love to burn a cone of Jasmine or Lavender. A packet costs Ksh 40 at a local supermarket. I find it calms me down, gives my space a good scent to start off the night.
On the web you get different articles on the benefits of burning incense. Remember to do your research on anything you wish to introduce into your home. What works for me may not work for you... and research includes talking to professionals and people who may have used the product, not just the internet :) You can also burn a scented candle or just a colored, they come in spicy flavors too like cinnamon mmh! What do yo use to change up the scents in your house? Share with us in the comments section, we would love to hear from you. By Wini Nduta Sema baridi lol! But I just did a 20 minute work out and I now have all this energy. I'm listening to an inspirational video while typing. Have you ever thought about the law of attraction? Hmm...
My post today is about decorating your house. I've seen on TV people can change the color of their walls or even add installments to their rental homes. That's a dream in Nairobi. Landlords don't really allow you to change anything. So here's what I do to try and quieten my creative mind. First in my bedroom, where I spend most of my time, the cushions are of different colors. My pillow cases, the same. This allows for the room to look a bit more decorated, like you put in some effort yoh! Second, in my sitting room I have hang a colored cloth, sort of draping on the wall. This breaks the monotony of the plain color of the wall. Almost making the wall look like a painting. The cloth has a floral print. Make sure the cloth you choose has a color similar to the wall so that it matches, or not; you can make it abstract too. Scent is also an important part in a home. I like incense; Jasmine and Lavender are my favorite. Your nose is important and I believe pleasing the senses makes for a comfortable home. Remember in my last post I spoke about soft pillows and the feeling on your toes? Some people prefer air fresheners that come in the aerosol cans, I like the more natural products. Another way to spice up the color in your home is to have differently colored curtains so that when you was and switch them out, you get a new experience each time. Enjoy! By Wini Nduta The Nairobi weather has been on the chilly side the past few months. Especially where I live, I adopt the kujifunika gubi gubi side of life to get through the night. My bed is very important to me. I dress it with fresh sheets, pretty duvets and a few more pillows and cushions than I would want to admit; I plan on getting more by the way!
The cushions come in handy when I am sitting on the chair next to my bed; reading or typing. They offer good support for my back and neck. I also drop one on my feet for warmth. If you get especially cold like me, I think it's a good idea to get a heater. I switch mine on for about ten minutes then close my bedroom door; that will help keep the room warm. On colder nights I fold an extra blanket at about knee length on top of my duvet. This helps so that if it gets hot I can just reach and put the blanket on the chair and go back to sleep. You can check out my Interior Decor board on Pinterest for more ideas on how to decorate your bed and make the room more cosy. What tips do you have to keep warm during this cold season? By Lizbeth Kariuki What better way to keep warm this cold season than snuggled under a warm blanket accompanied with some hot chocolate. Here's a recipe guaranteed to make your taste-buds tingle, plus its a twist on the classic hot chocolate recipe.
